City of Maroondah
Maroondah, (an aboriginal word for "looking over the water") covers a geographical area of 61.3km and is located 25km's east of the Melbourne CBD. Maroondah is a well-established municipality, blending the best of both the city and the country. Tree-lined streets, established neighbourhoods, new suburban developments, green open space, easy access to Central Melbourne and the attractions of the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges all encapsulate the City of Maroondah. Encompassing many of Melbournes's outer eastern suburbs, the City of Maroondah is one of the faster growing areas in the east. Maroondah includes the suburbs; Ringwood, Croydon, Heathmont, Warranwood, Bayswater and Kilsyth. Homes within most areas are relatively young, built in the last forty years, however there are exceptions. Some central areas of Ringwood are home to farmhouses dating back to the early 19th century.
The economy of Maroondah is dominated by the two major retail centres at Ringwood and Croydon, as well as an industrial area in the south. Suburbs to the North are semi-rural in parts, set amongst native bushland environment. A high proportion of residents are employed in manufacturing, wholesale and retail trade, and community services industries.
The proposed Eastern Freeway extension will bring the city closer than ever before, providing access to the city in around 15 to 20 minutes. The area is well serviced by trains with the Belgrave and Lilydale lines running through most suburbs within the area, providing a total of four stations within the area, as well as several stations in neighbouring municipalities.
